10/2/2019 9:33:00 PM

On Wednesday night the two unbeaten Division I teams in the ACCAC stepped on the court in Walraven Gym and Yavapai came out on top with a 3-1 victory. The final scores were 25-9, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21.

The Roughriders came out on fire in set 1 and took advantage of Arizona Western mistakes which led to an early lead. The blocking by the front line was dominant and helped the team play with a lot of confidence. The Lady Matadors started set 2 with a purpose and pulled away to an early lead. Midway through the 2nd set Arizona Western was leading by 5 points for a good portion of the set. Yavapai played virtually error free volleyball the 2nd half of set 2 and pulled even at 22 all. With the confidence they have found in each other during some tough 5 set victories over the past 2 weeks the Roughriders the players each did their jobs effectively and came away the 2 point win to take control of the match 2-0.

Arizona Western would not go away quietly and jumped out to a dominant lead in set 3 and coasted to the win. Set 4 saw Yavapai play lower error volleyball again and focus on scoring transition points which led to a 5 point lead in the middle of set 4. With the Roughriders in control and having match point up 24-18 the Lady Matadors again fought trying to force a 5th set. However, Yavapai went to their freshman outside hitter Kennedy Wright who got the kill and sealed the victory with a 4 point win.

The Roughrider offense ran through sophomore setter Pilar Daugherty who totaled 32 assists while chipping in 14 digs and 2 service aces. Daugherty was the ACCAC DI player of the week for her efforts in the 5 set win over Mesa CC. Sophomore middle blocker Lacie Tenney was outstanding at the net knocking down 12 kills while hitting .455. Tenney also had a team high 8 block assists. Kennedy Wright totaled a team high 13 kills and chipped in 9 digs. Tops in the digs category was freshman libero Heather Wanninger with 24.

The Roughriders will put their perfect 5-0 ACCAC record on the line again on Friday night as they take on the Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert CC. The match will start at 7:00 pm in Walraven Gym.
